| I had done everything I was supposed to. Gone to school; got good grades (well decent grades), graduated from college (in four years) and finally… “Ta-daaa” got a good job. Check, check and double check. I had done all that but found myself completely, utterly miserable. I was thousands of dollars deep in credit card debt, struggling to pay my rent and other bills, and had no social life because I just couldn't afford to go out and play (e.g. party) like a single, New York chic should. I had played by the rules but ended up with headaches and empty pockets.
At first I looked for another job that would pay more. Month after month I patrolled Monster.com and Hotjobs.com. I bought the New York Times every Sunday for the Employment section. I revised and revised and revised my cover letters until they were honed to fine edge. My resume was in perfect order. I made follow up phone calls to human resources personnel, mailed applications faithfully, and prayed for the job to magically appear.
When I was doing all this hunting I realized I didn’t even know what my dream job was. The Want Ads offered plenty of things I could do. I am reasonably smart and competent after all. Yet I never saw anything that made me think, “Yeah, Baby, that’s the work for me.”
Guess that should have been my first clue.
Months went by and . . . nothing. My dream job was not appearing out of the mist. However the bills were appearing much too regularly. I finally decided that if I wanted to change my life, I would have to take back some control. I had to figure out how to make money without needing an employer to give it to me. But how?
Looking back, that was a pivotal day in my life.
I started on a quest for a way to make money. And a quest it was, because I scoured libraries, bookstores, the Internet, seminars, classes, and lectures. Corny late night infomercials kept me awake until early morning. I bought books, journals, information manuals, e-books, audio CD-ROMs, and videos. I became an information junkie, hooked the idea of making my own money according to my own rules, and determined to find it come hell or high water.
A few things happened on that quest…
1. I learned how to recognize money-making opportunities
2. I became a serial entrepreneur
3. I paid off my five-figure credit card debt
Some of the businesses I started were a pet chauffeur service, pet sitting, urban physical fitness purveyor, creative real estate investor, dinner club organizer, and internet marketer. All of which I accomplished without a formal business education and launched with very, very little money.
Now I’m what Barbara Sher calls a “scanner”. Lots of different things interest me. When I created a business it wasn’t long before I was struck with two more ideas that seemed even better. That’s why I tried so many things—but I eventually realized something important. I had to LOVE the work I was doing. If I didn’t it didn’t matter how good the money was, the work began to feel like another life-sucking job.
Why My Journey is Your Opportunity
In 2007, I began the certification course offered by creative career counseling veteran Valerie Young. The course trained me to take what I learned to do for myself, and use it to help others make careers out of the things they love to do. Becoming an Outside the Job Box Career Counselor allows me to use my talent for coming up with creative ideas to make money, and put those ideas into action for other people.
